Idalou in brief
Idalou sits 7 miles northeast of Lubbock near where FM 400 meets US 62/82 and SH 114. The settlement grew up around a railway depot in the 1910s; the post office opened in 1917, a two-story brick school followed in 1919, and the town incorporated in 1925 with 538 residents. It is named for Ida and Lou Bassett, sisters of Julian M. Bassett of the Crosby-Bassett Livestock Company. In 2020 Idalou had 2,193 residents in about one square mile, with Idalou ISD and cotton farming at its center.
Typical Idalou concrete jobs
- Driveways and walks on in-town lots. See concrete driveways.
- Metal shop, barn and equipment slabs on farm and acreage property. See concrete slabs.
- Aprons in front of overhead doors where trucks and equipment turn.
- Patios and storm-shelter pads at rural homes.
Highway frontage and county roads
Many properties around Idalou front a farm-to-market road or a county road rather than a city street. A new drive onto a county road usually crosses a bar ditch, and Lubbock County Public Works requires a free permit for any culvert or structure in county right-of-way, approves the culvert type and size, and inspects the location the owner stakes. Driveways onto state highways and FM roads fall under TxDOT; ask the contractor or TxDOT before cutting a new access. Inside city limits, call Idalou city hall; we did not confirm the city's flatwork rules.
Building pads on farm ground
Cultivated cotton ground is loose and organic on top, with firmer loam and caliche below. A shop slab needs that loose topsoil stripped, a pad built and compacted in lifts, and enough height that rain runs away from the building. Thickened edges for the walls and anchor bolts placed to the building supplier's plan are standard. The slab cost estimator helps with yardage.
