Levelland at a glance
Levelland is the county seat of Hockley County, 30 miles west of Lubbock, with 12,652 residents in the 2020 census. C.W. Post laid it out as Hockley City in 1912, and it was soon renamed for the flat land around it. Cotton and oil built the economy; the 1950s oil boom brought a refinery and gas plant. South Plains College opened here in 1958. SH 114 runs along the north side of town and US 385 through the center. The town is also remembered for a series of UFO sightings reported by motorists in November 1957.
Levelland rules for sidewalks and driveways
- Sidewalks are required across front yards in subdivisions, and along the side yard on corner lots, unless the Planning and Zoning Commission grants a release.
- Subdivision sidewalks are 48 inches wide.
- Building permits are not issued until the City Manager or Building Inspector approves a site plan that includes the location of private driveways and access to off-street parking.
For questions, the city's Code Enforcement Department is at 806-894-0113. Ask whether your project, such as a new approach or a sidewalk replacement, needs a separate permit.
Common Levelland jobs
- Driveway replacement on the older streets in town.
- Sidewalks built to the 48-inch subdivision standard.
- Patios and covered slabs for backyard living out of the wind.
- Shop and garage slabs on larger lots at the edge of town.
Distance and scheduling
At 30 miles from Lubbock, travel time is part of a contractor's cost. Some contractors work Levelland regularly; others will want to combine it with nearby jobs or a larger scope. Bundling a driveway, walk and patio into one pour day usually prices better than three separate visits. Ready-mix delivery distance also matters for large slabs, so ask where the concrete is coming from.
