Heat underfoot
With a July normal high of 93.4°F and about 13 days a year at 100°F or more, a dark or smooth deck in Lubbock gets too hot for bare feet. Light colors, textured overlays and spray-applied cool-deck finishes reflect more sun and stay more comfortable. Sealed stamped concrete in darker colors runs hottest.
Drainage and slip resistance
- Slope the deck away from the pool so splash and rain, and anything blown in with it, do not wash back into the water.
- Use deck drains or a perimeter slope to move water off the slab, and keep it away from the house foundation.
- Pick a textured finish, and ask about grit in any sealer. Smooth, glossy sealed surfaces are slippery wet.
- Plan joints so they do not run into the coping in an odd spot. The joint between deck and coping needs a flexible sealant.
Repair, resurface or replace
Searches for pool deck repair and resurfacing appear in the Lubbock data alongside new decks. A deck with fine cracks and a worn surface but no movement can take an overlay or cool-deck coating. A deck that has heaved, sunk away from the coping or cracked into pieces usually needs replacement, which means tearing out around the pool without damaging the coping or plumbing. Ask whether the contractor has done pool-side demolition before. See concrete resurfacing and concrete removal.
Cost
Pool decks are priced like patios, with finish driving the number. National guides put plain concrete at about $5 to $8 per square foot installed, stamped at about $12 to $25, and resurfacing overlays at about $3 to $9 (decorative overlays up to about $20). Demolition around a pool adds labor. Local quotes set the price.
